Maps to the Hopewell Outing
Google Maps says it will take you 2-hours and 44-minutes to drive the 161-miles from the Big-I in Albuquerque to Hopewell Lake.
You can download the map above here.
The map below, available for download here, shows the local area around Hopewell Lake. You most likely will be coming to the Hopewell outing from the east (noted by the big yellow arrow on the map), after turning west onto US Hwy-64 in Tres Piedras. As you approach Hopewell Lake (from the east), turn left off US Hwy-64 onto NM-42B. This is a well-maintained dirt road easily drivable with a car.
Immediately after turning onto NM-42B you can go to Hopewell Lake by turning right at the next 2 turn-offs, or proceed straight on NM-42B to our Hopewell outing. About 1/4-mile on NM-42B you will pass the turnoff to the Carson National Forest Hopewell Lake campground, which has 31 campsites with all the amenities you'd expect from of a campground, that is, running water, restrooms, designated camp sites, picnic tables, ... .
Most of us will be setting up our base-camp at the location labeled "food and camping area for Hopewell outing" on the map below, which is a "dispersed camping" site. This is also the site of our social gathering. As you approach our Hopewell outing location you will see several of our campsites beyond the Y-intersection. The easiest way to the campsites and our outing site is to turn right at the Y-intersection. The road is still good to our Hopewell outing site, but if you proceed on this dirt road, down to the Placer Creek where we do some gold prospecting, the road becomes very rough, and a high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended.

san Pedro mine Summer picnic and outing
DETAILS: Saturday, June 28
TIME: All-day event, main picnic meal will be lunch at noon.
There will be a strict time-window to control access to the claim, and the picnic area. Our Host, Bobby Gonzales, will be at the gate from 6AM to 9AM to give GPANM members access to the claim. There will be a means of letting people leave whenever they want to exit the claim.
PLACE: San Pedro mine, on private property in the San Pedro mountains. See the Map below.
DIRECTIONS TO OUTING: See the map below.
REASON FOR OUTING: Summer picnic, social event, raffles for mineral specimens, tour by Bobby Gonzales of several mines in the area, minor mineral collection
HOST: Bobby Gonzales, 505-917-1273
DETAILS: The 2025 Summer Picnic will be held on a leveled patch of ground within the San Pedro mine claim (at the same location as many past picnics). The San Pedro mine area is on private property, and the owners have loaned a gate key to Bobby so he can control access to the outing to just GPANM members and their families.
A port-a-potty has been rented and will be onsite for the duration of the picnic.
This picnic will be a variation of a potluck picnic. GPANM members Ken Chapman, Brad Fecht and Chris Carrico (a new member) will be doing the cooking of at least brisket, pulled pork, beans, smoked sausage, mac and cheese, salad and more. There will be a $10 "attendance fee" or "member buy-in" with 50% of the money going to a 50/50 raffle, and the other 50% to cover food costs and the porta-potty rental. Please bring chairs, umbrellas, eating utensils, cups, and drinks.
For last minute details, click here for the email message that our president, Todd Roberts, sent out on Tuesday, June 24.
If you still have questions, feel free to send Bobby an email, using the Comments box below.
........................................................
We are guests on the San Pedro claim. Please respect the owners and do not abuse our visit by taking a bunch of rocks and minerals - taking a few is ok, but a lot is not!
(A few individuals from other clubs have misused this honor, and as a consequence their entire club has now been banned from the claim.)
Map
Note: Past maps were incorrect! Please use the following information.
The map below starts at the Mailboxes. (For information on the Mailboxes, see the Claims section.) After turning onto NM-344, off NM-14, drive 1.87-miles to the turnoff for Miners Row Road. (Miners Row Road will be the 2nd left after you reach the top of the hill.) There is a street sign on the north side of road at this intersection. There is a locked gate a little distance in on Miners Row Road, and this is where Bobby will be at to let people in and out of the San Pedro claim. Miners Row Road is a dirt road, but it is drivable with a passenger car. The picnic area is 0.9-miles up Miners Row Road. There are several side roads off Miners Row Road, just take the "best" dirt road. You know you're on the correct road when you pass, on your left, a tall large pile of black slag at 0.8-miles. The picnic area is just beyond this slag pile. Turn right to enter the large flat picnic area, and park anywhere.

Outing to GPANM Circle of Friends
Photos from past Circle of Friends outings!
Date: May 17 and 18, 2025 (all weekend!)
Place: GPANM Circle of Friends Claim
Host: Larry Weingarten, c: 505-301-0288
Driving directions:
Our GPANM Circle of Friends claim is about 139-miles from the Big-I in Albuquerque. The claim is not an easy claim to find as there are lots of not-so-obvious turns! If you have never been to the Circle of Friends, or have been there, but are not quite sure how to get back there, follow the detailed directions described on the Circle of Friends webpage (www.gpanm.org/circle-of-friends.html). Larry, our host, will also be putting up paper-plate signs telling everyone where to turn. Look for the paper plates!

Camping:
The Circle of Friends claim does not have a large flat area for a large group to camp together, however, just before entering the claim there is a large flat open area, surrounded by pinon and juniper trees, with lots of spaces for people to set up camp and congregate. Again, see the the Circle of Friends webpage (www.gpanm.org/circle-of-friends.html) for more details. Below is a photo of this camping area.
Other Details and Events:
-- No signups! Just come on out!
-- There will not be any GPANM-sponsored meal during this outing - everyone will be responsible for their own food and drinks! Larry said he's cooking pancakes for anyone at least one morning!
-- Larry is also our main GPANM member certifier on our claims, so he will be certificating new members on the GPANM Circle of Friends claim.
-- There will be lots of time for gold prospecting and exploring.
-- This is arguably our "remotest" claim, so practicing safety is especially paramount! See Dean Klassy's handouts, from his recent safety presentation, for best safety practices! (Safety Briefing, Handout, Klassy, 2025 and Safety Briefing, Notes Klassy, 2025)
-- I'm not positive, but I'm quite sure there is no cell phone service at the Circle of Friends claim. So, make note of these outing details and download your maps before you leave home.
-- If you're a GPAA member, the 80-acre GPAA Gold Skeye Seven claim is a little over a mile through and beyond the GPANM Circle of Friends claim.

For new members, who do not know how to get to the claim, a TBD GPANM colleague will meet you at the "Mailboxes". Directions to the "Mailboxes" can be found here. We will meet up at the big open space just south of the Paul & Eddy's claim. (The road to the big open space is drivable by most street vehicles. However, some roads further on in the claim do require an off-road vehicle. Most importantly, open and close the two gates on the road to Paul & Eddy's claim.)
Other information:
-- The GPANM will not be providing food for this outing, so bring your own food, snacks, and beverages. Consider it a potluck.
-- There will be contest prices such as silver coins and silver bars.
It's only a short drive from ABQ, so come on out
and enjoy a nice day with your GPANM colleagues.

Outing to Redrock Claim
View from the NE Redrock claim corner post, looking south-southwest across the entire claim,
towards the Black Range on the horizon.
towards the Black Range on the horizon.
Driving Directions: Exit 100, off I-25, is about 125 miles south of the Big-I in Albuquerque. The GPANM Redrock Claim webpage has more details on the route and maps.
Other Information:
-- Remember to bring your GPANM Membership card.
-- The GPANM will not be providing food for this outing, so bring your own food, snacks, and beverages. Larry will have water and some cokes, peanut butter and jelly, and bread, so you won't go hungry.
-- As there is no water at the Redrock claim, dry washing is the main prospecting tool of choice. The gold at Redrock tends to be small so metal detecting may not be fruitful.
-- The weather forecast looks great - warm temperatures, lots of sun, and little wind!
Come on out and enjoy a nice relaxing not-so-winter day
with your GPANM colleagues!

GPANM Thanksgiving Food Drive
Dates: Thursday, November 21, 2024
Time: 6:00 PM
Place: At the October GPANM General Meeting, held at the:
Los Griegos Health and Social Service Center

Host: Bobby Gonzales
Event: For more details, see Bobby's email message to the membership below.
.................................
Hello all,
It seems you only hear from me when I want your money (for the Los Griegos Community.)
I am writing this to you the members of GPANM aka The Heart of Gold Society. This is one of my favorite times of the year for me and I’m sure it is for you.
The fall colors are changing and though the prospecting season is closing, a new season begins for our organization. This is the time of year The Association shows its true “colors.” We’re not talking a flash or spec in the pan that we work so hard to find.
For the benefit of our newer members The Los Griegos Community Center serves those in the community/neighborhood for which it was named - Los Griegos.
They work tirelessly to provide assistance to the community with things like food, health care, school needs for kids, disaster relief and much much more. They are so good at what they do they’re often asked assistance with city wide projects.
The Center opens their doors for us to use the facilities, for meetings, and events. They don’t charge anything for all they do for us. Our way of giving back is through our charity fundraisers.
This Thursday we are having our Thanksgiving fundraiser at the meeting. In addition to the gold that will be given away in our raffle there will be more.
Dean Brubaker, long time member who has led the GPANM charity charge for decades has donated a Keene 151 Drywasher worth well over $1,500. I also donated some valuable mineral specimens. You got to see them at the last meeting if you were there.
I am adding a few more things to the prize list. I will be adding a couple more, extremely rare, iridescent garnets. These garnets be some of the most spectacular garnets you have ever seen.
There’s more. I’m throwing in this beautiful piece of native silver in a calcite matrix.
There’s only one way to win one of these great prizes and that is to show up and buy a ticket. The only way to win more than one of these prizes is to buy more than one ticket.
One of our newer members was here all the way from Texas earlier this summer. He was so impressed with all the great things we do that he wanted to make a donation. The school supply drive had just ended so I suggested he apply his donation to the next fundraiser. He did that. He gave me money to buy forty tickets.
So please this is important do what you have to. Get some money in the door. Take out a second mortgage, dig up one of those mason jars, talk to your rich uncle, rob a bank…
Strike that last one we want to see you at the next meeting.
Let’s do what we can to help the Los Griegos Community.
Thank you.

GPANM Paul & Eddy's claim outing
Dates: Saturday, October 19, 2024
Time: All day!
Host: We need a host!!! (temporarily Dave Minarik, our outgoing president)
Events: There were discussions about having various metal detecting contests, such as, who can find the most interesting trash, who can find the most trash, and prices were discussed, too. (Sorry, the details are sketchy.) And, of course, if you find a gold nugget, you win automatically! Paul & Eddy's is a great claim to dry wash. Otherwise, this will be a low-key GPANM event. Bring your own food and beverages. It's only a short drive from ABQ! Come on out and enjoy a nice relaxing autumn day with your GPANM colleagues.
More details may be coming soon!
Driving directions: This is a typical Paul & Eddy's claim outing. Maps to the claim can be found here. We will meet up at the big open space just south of Paul & Eddy's claim, and then spread out and prospect on the claim.
The road: The road to the big open space is drivable by most street vehicles. However, some roads further on in the claim do require an off-road vehicle. Most importantly open and close the two gates on the road to Paul & Eddy's claim.
B&D claims outing
Date: Saturday, August 24, 2024
Time: All day!
Host: David Minarik (new host!) (David Skeberdis is sick!)
Important! The Association will be providing sub-sandwiches for lunch at this outing! It is important that the Host knows how many subs to order and bring to the outing. So, please fill out any one of the signup lists! The online signup form is below.
Driving directions: This is a typical B&D outing. Maps to the B&D claims can be found here. We will meet up at "The Pad", and then spread out and prospect on the B&D claims. We will reconvene back at "The Pad" to eat lunch. For new GPANM members, who are not sure how to get to the B&D claims, Larry Weingarten (text at 505-301-0288) will meet up with you at "The Mailboxes" before 9 AM. Driving directions to "The Mailboxes" can be found here. Promptly at 9:00 AM, Larry will lead the caravan to the B&D claims.
The road: As described in the claims section, the last 2.2-miles on the road to the B&D claims is a very rough dirt road. Most vehicles, including a typical city vehicle, should not have problems, but drive slow and watch the road carefully and navigate around the ruts and rocks. If you're still unsure about your vehicle consider carpooling with someone who has driven the road.
Motivations: For new GPANM members, we have a nice paystreak on our B&D#3 and #5 claims. Maps and a discussion of the paystreak can be found here. Tom Briggs, and others, will be bringing their dry washers and other prospecting equipment, like metal detectors. This is a great opportunity to see, learn-about and operate prospecting equipment.
Be Prepared! This time of year we often experience afternoon rainstorms. So, be prepared for rain. The temperature will probably be in the mid to upper-80s, with mostly sunny skies. Elevation at the pad is 7330 feet, everything else is uphill from there. All 80 acres of the B&D claims are very rugged and not flat - the pad is the only surface that is flat! Dress appropriately! Bring and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. See you out there!
