All our placer mining activity is governed by the General Mining Act of 1872, and subsequent amendments and regulations. The 1872 Act, or Law as it is often referred to, gives all Americans the right to extract minerals on federal lands that are open to mineral extraction. It is the law that allows us to be gold prospectors on public lands. As gold prospectors we should be knowledgeable of this law and the subsequent amendments and regulations.
A good background and historical reference on the General Mining Act of 1872 can be found here.
A transcribed copy of the General Mining Act of 1872 can be found here.
There have been many subsequent federal amendments and regulations passed that affect how the General Mining Act of 1872 is enforced. A list can be found here.
